How to Prepare for Your Engagement Session

Tips

  • Iron your clothes. The camera really does pick up the small wrinkles in your shirts/dresses.

  • Wear what you know you look best in and what makes you feel good.

  • Avoid small patterns. These can be difficult for the camera to pick up.

  • If possible, have your wedding day make up trial run the same day to see how it photographs!

  • If you planned to wear heels, bring a change of shoes, just in case we need to walk anywhere before we take the pictures.

  • Think about the amount of lipstick or the shade of lipstick you apply for photos. It could get messy.

  • Jackets and hats are great accessories. Feel free to bring them to add layers.

  • I always recommend that ladies wear pants for the casual outfit and a dress for a fancier outfit. Different poses/prompts involve different outfits.

  • Solid-colored long sleeve Tee’s or button-ups are recommended for the gentlemen.

  • Neutrals such as browns, blacks, and whites look great on camera. I recommend wearing neutral colors for at least one outfit.

  • Visiting the tanning booth or using self-tanning lotion before the session is not highly recommended, for it can come out splotchy or too strong. Typically hands and feet are left much paler than the rest of the skin.

  • Lastly, your hands and fingernails will appear in the photos: Trim and polish nails as necessary.

Props

Think about bringing props! This can give your engagement session more of a style and can give you something to do for more candid looking shots as well. Some ideas, but not
exclusive to:

  • Rowboat

  • Your uniform

  • Bikes, skateboards, etc.

  • A record player / A guitar

  • Fishing rods

  • A picnic

  • Your dog (Yaaas!)

  • Bouquet / flower crown

  • Food/drinks like wine, coffee, ice cream etc.

  • Bathing suits (At the beach)
